This tour in a nutshell

Join our local guides for a week long hiking holiday in the Portuguese southwest Coast, walking on the best trails of the Rota Vicentina.

Set out on an enchanting seaside hiking journey along the Vicentina Coast Natural Park, exploring its quaint fisherman villages and secluded beaches while immersing yourself in the laidback atmosphere of the remarkable South West Alentejo region. Discover the serene landscapes of the Southwest Alentejo Natural Park, a pristine stretch of European coastline which has been drawing global attention from zoologists and botanists for its biodiversity and preservation state. Delight in the diverseness of beaches, all from expansive white sand beaches to intimate coves, Malhão, Vila Nova de Milfontes, Almograve, Monte Clérigo, Arrifana and Praia do Amado, many of them preserved in a virtually unspoiled state.

The Alentejo trails, with their gentle topography, provide a welcoming setting for walking enthusiasts of all levels. Embark with us on a hike from Almograve to the most southwestern point of Europe, Cape Saint Vincent, and take on the opportunity to visit the Sagres promontory, a lookout point on which the globalisation-pioneer ‘Henry the navigator’ chose to build a fort and his residence back in the XV century.

Indulge in the region's authentic gastronomy and outstanding wines, savoring fresh caught fish and seafood. Challenge yourself with daily hiking options tailored to your preferences, all offering privileged views of the Atlantic beaches. Immerse yourself in this walking tour, defining your goals and pace while relishing the unparalleled beauty of the Southwest Alentejo.

Breakfast at the hotel and checkout. At the scheduled time you’ll be transferred to Almograve, where your walk will begin, right at the beach. Once you pass the small fishing harbor, you'll follow the trail atop the dramatic sandstone cliffs that overlook the ocean. The cliffs are teeming with nesting birds, creating a somewhat lunar landscape. About halfway through, you'll reach the quaint village of Cavaleiro, where you can take a break and enjoy some refreshments. Beyond Cavaleiro, you'll resume your journey along the cliff trails of Cabo Sardão, with its lighthouse positioned right along the trail. At the end of your hike, upon arriving at the tiny fishing village of Porto das Barcas, we’ll provide a transfer to the hotel.

Hotel – Casa da Seiceira  or Craveiral Farmhouse (included in the Premium option)

Day 3: Praia da Amália – Odeceixe – 12.1km and 245m of elevation gain

Breakfast at the hotel and checkout. At the scheduled time you’ll be transferred to the Amália beach, a secluded cove with crystal-clear waters. The name may ring a bell: Amália was one of Portugal’s most popular ‘fado’ singer ever, had a house here and got a lot of inspiration from her long stays, during summer. Another of the highlights is the charming village of Azenha do Mar, where fisherman also dedicate some of their time to the gathering of seaweed, which is then dried and sold to local industries, that turn it into fertiliser. Our trail keeps winding its way through a landscape of rolling hills, ending at the lively fishing village of Odeceixe, where you can enjoy fresh seafood and soak up the laid-back atmosphere.

Hotel - Casas do Moinho (upgraded rooms in Premium option)

Day 4: Amoreira – Arrifana –14.7km and 294m / Premium: 19.5km and 450m of elevation gain

Breakfast at the hotel. At the scheduled time you’ll be transferred to the Amoreira beach where the trail starts. After a short paved section, you’ll reach Monte Clérigo where you’ll be able to get a privileged view over this expansive surfing beach and have a refreshment at one of the restaurants on the cliff. From here you’ll head south along the coast and cliffs of Ponta da Atalaia and then reaching Arrifana, where you’ll be marvelled by the postcard-like views. Take off your boots and enjoy a walk along the beach. Depending on the chosen accommodation, you’ll be almost done or have some more distance to cover, on coastal trails.

Hotel – Herdade do Monte do Sol or Praia do Canal (included in the Premium option)

Day 5: Arrifana – Carrapateira – 15.3km and 145m / Premium: 21.2km and 344m / of elevation gain

Breakfast at the hotel. You’ll start walking right from your hotel but be prepared for self-suficiency: not many options in what comes to refreshments until you reach the endpoint in Carrapateira. You’ll start by descending to the picturesque Canal beach, but tread carefully – the descent is steep. As you ascend on dirt roads, you'll conquer a gradual climb, unveiling the beauty of the hilly coastal landscape until you find yourself immersed in a eucalyptus forest. Navigate a series of hills, enjoying the undulating terrain until the scenery unfolds, revealing a breathtaking downhill path leading you to the pristine coast and the enchanting beach of Bordeira. Concluding your hike in Carrapateira, you'll be whisked back to your hotel, capping off a day of scenic exploration and physical accomplishment.

Hotel – Herdade do Monte do Sol or Praia do Canal (included in the Premium option)

Day 6: Vila do Bispo - Sagres – 14.2km and 142m of elevation gain

Breakfast at the hotel and checkout. At the scheduled time you’ll be transferred to the Cordoama beach, near the town Vila do Bispo and start the very last section of your hiking holiday. Today offers a rich display of dramatic scenery as you approach the tall cliffs of São Vicente Cape and Sagres. The initial segment of the journey unfolds on expansive gravel or dirt paths and, as you draw closer to the cape, the mesmerizing deep blue hues of the ocean come into view. Traverse a stretch of coastal landscapes between Ponta Ruiva and the São Vicente Cape. The arrival to the fort/ lighthouse on top of the cliff, at the most southwestern point of Europe marks the conclusion of your memorable journey! After properly celebrating your achievement with a suggested visit to the nearby Sagres fortress, last known residence of Portugal's most famous maritime entrepreneur,

RIDER TYPES:

1 BEGINNER

/ I walk/hike on a regular basis, for fitness. I prefer rolling terrain but enjoy reaching my goals and enjoy an active lifestyle. I like to overcome some challenges, but mostly enjoy the landscapes and atmosphere, going out on hikes up to 2 or three hours.

You will get to hike at your own pace, in moderate distances and hop on our van if you so desire or challenge yourself when you feel comfortable! You’ll get to walk in a group with like-minded people and accompanied by our guides, discovering the best of Portugal

2 INTERMEDIATE

/ Hiking is a great part of my life, and I walk regularly. I am comfortable with hikes of 3 to 4 hours, or even more at a relatively strong pace. I like to be challenged and to surpass obstacles, so that I can explore more and discover the most beautiful places.

You will get to explore different riding experiences, from tougher climbs to walking along in great company. You’ll have time to enjoy the great landscapes, but also enjoy the descents and push yourself climbing those tough hills. You’ll enjoy the variety of terrain, and pushing a little harder to get off the beaten path.

3 EXPERT

/ I am an explorer by nature and understand I have to push myself to get to the top of the summit. I love to climb, hike, do trail running and tackle big climbs to long, technical descents, especially the ones that allow me to push my limits and make long lasting memories. I love to spend the full day walking or even trail running.

You’ll get to hike or run the best Portuguese trails and push yourself as hard as you can, as at the end of the day, you know you’ll be able to rest and relax. Lead the pack and take on the special extra-challenges we have in store for you – try to keep up with our guides as you go for the extra mile just before your well deserved rest and massage at the hotel!
