This tour in a nutshell

Join this one week hiking holidays in the Portuguese southwest Coast, walking by the best trails of the Rota Vicentina.

This is an amazing oceanic hike that will take you from the beginning of the Vicentina Coast Natural park and along some of the most secluded beaches in the “Costa Vicentina”, experiencing the laidback and relaxed atmosphere of this region of the Alentejo Southwest, characterized by wuaint fisehrmen villages, oceanic views, abundance of birds and natural beauty. Enjoy your hikes in these peaceful rolling hills, discovering these great natural parks.

Walk along the Southwest Alentejo natural park, the finest preserved stretch of European coastline, covering over 100 km. These Parks include various unique species of animal and plant life, and are visited by many zoologists and botanists from all parts of the world.

Experience the tremendous variety of beaches, including long stretches of sand and small beaches nested between the cliffs and rocks. Beaches such as Porto Covo, Malhão, Vila Nova de Milfontes, Almograve, Monte Clérigo, Arrifana and Praia do Amado, many of them preserved in a virtually unspoiled state.

Hike from Porto Covo to Cape of São Vicente and the nearby Sagres promontory that housed the famous nautical school founded by the Infante D. Henrique in the 15th century. The trails of the Alentejo provide a great atmosphere for walking and hiking tours with its gentler topography.

With its trademark gastronomy and great wines, it’s a great opportunity to taste the amazing fresh fish and seafood that are abundant in this region, as well as the local pastries.

Challenge yourself in this walking tour, by hiking towards the viewpoints and get a privileged look at the atlantic beaches. Choose everyday between shorter or longer hikes and define your own goals and pace throughout your riding experience.

Day to Day:

What you'll be experiencing everyday

Day 1: Lisbon, Transfer to Porto Covo – Ilha Pessegueiro

Pick up at Lisbon Airport or hotel and transfer to your hotel in Porto Covo. Tour briefing. The rest of the day is free to relax at your hotel or enjoy the beach just across from your hotel.

Hotel – Refúgio da Praia – Seaside & Nature

Day 2: Porto Covo – Vila Nova de Milfontes – 16km and 150m of accumulated climb

Breakfast at the hotel. Today you’ll start walking from your hotel along the beaches of Aivados and Malhão towards the center of Vila Nova de Milfontes. Most of the route goes along a coastal sandy trail and over the dunes so typical of this part of the coast. It’s a long day with considerable difficulty due to the sandy tracks and dunes, with just a few opportunities to stop for a coffee and refreshments before Vila Nova de Milfontes. If you happen to walk during the low tide you’ll be able to do so on the water’s edge, skipping the wide tracks in the dunes.

Hotel – Casa do Adro

Day 3: Transfer to Almograve – Zambujeira (Herdade Touril) – 17,5km and 200m of accumulated climb

Breakfast at the hotel. At the scheduled time you’ll be transferred to Almograve. Your walk will start from the beach of Almograve, and as soon as you pass the small fishing harbour you’ll walk along the trail on top of the dramatic sandstone cliffs overlooking the ocean, full of birds nesting and a somewhat lunar landscape. Roughly half way you’ll get to the small village of Cavaleiro, where you can stop for a break and some refreshments. After Cavaleiro you’ll re-enter the cliff trails of Cabo Sardão, with its lighthouse right along the trail, distancing just 5 km from your hotel for the day. Just follow the signs that say Herdade do Touril.

Hotel - Herdade do Touril

Day 4: Zambujeira – Odeceixe – 18km and 190m of accumulated climb

Breakfast at the hotel. Leave your hotel and join the cliff trail again that will lead you to Porto da Barca, a small fishing port at the end of a narrow and steep downhill trail. After crossing the port you’ll enter the walking path to Zambujeira do Mar, a quaint little village most known for its summer music festival. Continue along the coast walking along the Alteirinhos and Carvalhal beaches. When you reach Amália beach, right after you emerged from the forested area, you’ll be having some of the most spectacular views of the Vicentina Coast. Continue on the trail past Amália until you reach the north side of Odeceixe beach. Come down the trail and enter the paved road that will lead you parallel to the river until you cross the bridge and go up the village to your hotel.

Hotel – Casas do Moinho

Day 5: Transfer to Aljezur Castle - Aljezur - Arrifana – 18km and 224m of accumulated climb

Breakfast at the hotel. At the scheduled time you’ll be transferred to the Castle of Aljezur from where today’s walk will start. After admiring the views from the castle walk along the Amoreira valley through Vale da Telha and then to Monte Clérigo where you’ll be able to get a privileged view over Amoreira Beach and have a few refreshments at the restaurants on edge of the cliff and overlooking the beach. From here you’ll head south along the coast and cliffs of Ponta da Atalaia and then reaching Arrifana, where you’ll be marvelled with the views.

Hotel – Herdade Monte do Sol

Day 6: Arrifana – Carrapateira – 18km and 230m of accumulated climb

Breakfast at the hotel. On this day there will be no opportunities to buy refreshments until you reach your destination in Carrapateira, so prepare” You’ll start your walk going downhill to Canal beach, careful because it’s a steep descent! From there you’ll have a long steady climb on dirt roads to the top of this hilly coastal area unitl you reach a forested area of eucalyptus. You’ll be going up and down a series of hills in this area until the landscape opens up and you’ll start to go downhill towards the coast and the beach of Bordeira. When the trail joins with the road you’ll be very close to your hotel in Carrapateira.

Hotel – Casa Fajara

Day 7: Transfer to Vila Bispo - Vila do Bispo – Sagres – 20km and 100m of accumulated climb

Breakfast at the hotel. At the scheduled time you’ll be transferred to Vila do Bispo. From this village you’ll enter the last stretch of your walking tour. This day is fertile in dramatic landscape as you near the tall cliffs of the São Vicente Cape and Sagres. The first part of the route will be done in wide gravel or dirt roads and as you get nearer to the cape you’ll start seeing the profound blue of the ocean. You’ll walk a stretch of fabulous coastal views between Ponta Ruiva and the Cape. From the cape you can continue east along the coast, along the paved road, passing the Beliche Fort and Beach as well as the Sagres Fortress. Be sure to visit them! RIDER TYPES:

1 BEGINNER

/ I walk/hike on a regular basis, for fitness. I prefer rolling terrain but enjoy reaching my goals and enjoy an active lifestyle. I like to overcome some challenges, but mostly enjoy the landscapes and atmosphere, going out on hikes up to 2 or three hours.

You will get to hike at your own pace, in moderate distances and hop on our van if you so desire or challenge yourself when you feel comfortable! You’ll get to walk in a group with like-minded people and accompanied by our guides, discovering the best of Portugal

2 INTERMEDIATE

/ Hiking is a great part of my life, and I walk regularly. I am comfortable with hikes of 3 to 4 hours, or even more at a relatively strong pace. I like to be challenged and to surpass obstacles, so that I can explore more and discover the most beautiful places.

You will get to explore different riding experiences, from tougher climbs to walking along in great company. You’ll have time to enjoy the great landscapes, but also enjoy the descents and push yourself climbing those tough hills. You’ll enjoy the variety of terrain, and pushing a little harder to get off the beaten path.

3 EXPERT

/ I am an explorer by nature and understand I have to push myself to get to the top of the summit. I love to climb, hike, do trail running and tackle big climbs to long, technical descents, especially the ones that allow me to push my limits and make long lasting memories. I love to spend the full day walking or even trail running.

You’ll get to hike or run the best Portuguese trails and push yourself as hard as you can, as at the end of the day, you know you’ll be able to rest and relax. Lead the pack and take on the special extra-challenges we have in store for you – try to keep up with our guides as you go for the extra mile just before your well deserved rest and massage at the hotel!
