Getting to know the Douro isn’t just about travelling through the region. It means getting to know its estates, traditional vineyards, wineries, wines and the local people who greet us with broad smiles. A visit to Quinta Nova de Nossa Senhora do Carmo - an indispensable reference and the leading award-winning wine tourism site in Portugal - is a journey to a unique and magical universe, where time seems to slow down, making visitors want to linger and return as soon as they can.
With a history spanning over 200 years, Quinta Nova de Nossa Senhora do Carmo occupies over 120 ha of land and has been listed since the first demarcation of the Douro wine region, in 1756, during the Pombaline era. The original wine cellar that dates back to 1764 and the 19th-century manor house with a chapel (1765) are harmoniously integrated into one of the estate's hills.
Staying in the manor house enables guests to feel the ambience of a large Portuguese family home, surrounded by the valley’s spectacular scenery along a 1.5 km stretch of the Douro River, in one of the most emblematic zones of the region.
Here the real luxury is the ambience of the manor house that offers a unique setting, defined by the historic vine terraces that span the different buildings, including a small chapel. The sophisticated and welcoming comfort of the communal areas has been carefully designed so that guests feel that they are the main protagonists, offering the ideal place to relax and enjoy life, sample some exquisite wines and calmly enjoy genuinely delicious food in the Conceitus restaurant that guarantees an excellent service, marked by an attentive and knowledgeable team.
With a unique setting overlooking the Douro River, the 11 rooms offer spectacular views over the centuries-old terraced vineyards - a breathtaking landscape. In the morning guests are welcomed at a huge farm table with a delicious traditional breakfast. The interior spaces include the winter room and small private game rooms, which are only available to guests. The gardens are surrounded by centuries-old trees, cypresses and native plants that invite visitors to take a dip in the small pool overlooking the vineyards. During the stay, it is also possible to take an invigorating walk along the three routes signalled in the Estate, spanning eight kilometres, which offer the chance to experience the true spirit of the region.
